There is a word that headmasters should hold in their minds and repeat like a mantra: vision. My head master is a person of vision. The first day he steps in the school around August 2002, he developed a new vision which he promised to himself must be achieved upon his next posting.

My headmaster is the key to the success of my school in recent years, and professional recognition would do much to raise the standard in my school.

No enterprise can succeed without leadership, and research has shown time and time again that it is vital in education. My headmaster inspires and motivates staff and pupils while keeping a firm eye on the school's ultimate goal: raising standards. School inspectors (Nazir Sekolah) have found a strong link between failing schools and weak leadership.

My school headmaster has set an example to the school. Above all, he is able to focus strongly on what matters most: on standards of teaching and learning. Ten years ago it would have been unusual for this school head to spend time watching staff work, but inspections and appraisals have changed that. Now my school’s classroom door is never really closed. Ten years ago there were no high achievers in public examination (UPSR) but since his arrival in 2002, there was gradual increase in quality and quantity attain in UPSR exam. Since than, State and federal recognize the achievement of this school. Besides academic excellence, he also has created a new standard for Co-Curricular activities. The school has become feeder for district level badminton and athletics championship.

But my headmaster is not just leading - he is also inspiring. He is the kind of person who believes in fashionable word such as: empowerment. My headmaster always makes my school’s staff feel that they can have ideas of their own and that if they take calculated risks they will receive support.

There are times he has to make hard decisions. While the teachers will mutter in the staff room about one of their number who is lazy and incompetent, my headmaster will always find some good solution to overcome this sort of problems which in a way never hurt one’s feeling.

My headmasters thought will always fly by in a whirl of new initiatives. While these initiatives took time to be implemented, a few improvements may yet be visible. This is the time my headmaster keeps faith, and constantly tells the rest of the school: "It will work. Give it time." He is a very strong head, not to say a foolish one, who never had doubts. But the key to success is never to show them.

My headmaster performs a delicate balancing act at all times between the demands of staff, pupils, parents and education departments. The demands of his spouse and children’s will generally take fifth and sixth place in his attentions. So, we the staff of this school will always miss him. We hope his transfer to his home town will do wonders for his family life and will bring a good bright future for the new school. Wish all the best Sir. We really learn and enjoy your tenure at the school.

For those who had used E-Kalappai and Professional version of 'Azhagi', this tutorial will offer nothing new. But for those who love to write in Tamil on the net, chat applications and even in MS Office applications like MS Word, PowerPoint etc.. etc.. whatevere application that can take up texts, this tutorial will be very useful. Infact one such instance, when I discovered 'Azhagi', change my course in blogging. I started writing a lot in Tamil, which happens to be my mother tongue, favourite language and above all my best medium of expression. I am a small town brought up for whom English is just another language, not something I breath, dream and talk in. So whenever I translated my thoughts in English whatever I felt, I always found that something is missing. Thats why 'Azhagi' means a lot to me. With this NHM, my horizons on internet just expands to chat applications and other message boards. If I forget English in an year, that won't be a surprise for me.

Why we need NHM COnvertor? Infact NHM Convertor is an optional tool, which you can use to convert the "garbled fonts" to readable Unicode format. Before Windows XP that supported the Unicode format, the applications needed specific language fonts to be installed in the recipient system. Else the recipient cannot be able to read the output. In today’s hectic world of busyness and the plentitude of after school activities, how do you gauge the quality of these programs?  Your child may have a variety of interest, and you cannot possible put them into each an every after school program. After all, when parents are dishing out money for these activities, they really need to understand the details of the program.
Given below is a list of characteristics an effective after school activity should have.

• An effective program will include objectives and goals that should be clear to the parents. Programs should be organized and structured and also be age-appropriate for the child.

• The ratio of teachers or instructors to students should be reasonable for that particular program.

• The staff should be professional, trained, friendly and maintain a positive relationship with all of the children.

• One of the prime aims for an after school program is the child development in the realm of academic, personal, physical, and social skills.

• The activity should be challenging and provide many opportunities for the student to increase their level of understanding of complex concepts.

• There should not be a lot of lag-time or downtime. You are paying for an activity, not just for the child or teenager to sit around.

• Quality after school activities encourage children and teens to grow stronger -mentally, emotionally, or physically.

• An effective after-school program emphasizes safety. The staff should not only be qualified, but alert and aware of safety hazards. Never sign your children up for an activity where safety is a matter of accident instead of a matter of priority.

• The activities should be encouraging and allow the children to voice their opinion and be respected. The program should encourage participation.

• The after school program should reward success, yet encourage being a “good sport” and that good healthy competition can be rewarding. Positive reinforcements enhance confidence and increase self-esteem.

• Don’t overlook the fun aspect. School is work. While after school, or extra-curricular activities, should be structured and organized, having fun is also an important part.

The bottom line is successful programs incorporate activities that help the social, physical, and mental development of the child.

How We Can Help Tsunami Victim In Japan

A deadly 8.9 earthquake struck Japan, one of the largest earthquakes in the history of Japan.

A massive 23-foot tsunami also hit the coast killing hundreds, leveling homes, and sweeping away cars and boats. 300 to 400 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, according to the AP.

The first thing on most peoples' minds after they hear the news of a horrific disaster is, what can I do to help?

Even if you're thousands of miles away, there are various ways that you can offer your support to the earthquake and tsunami relief effort. Here are just a few of them:

The Red Cross: The Japanese Red Cross has already deployed 11 national disaster response teams to respond to the crisis but you can support their efforts by donating money. Similar to their efforts to help Haiti after the earthquake in 2010, Red Cross is accepting donations either online or via text message. Simply text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone (you'll be prompted to confirm with a second text reading YES).

Shelterbox: The UK-based organization has 18 international affiliates and it has launched an online fundraiser for the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. Shelterbox provides assistance to afflicted countries by delivering large utility boxes that contain a shelter and other emergency relief tools. To donate online, simply go to your country's site and click DONATE.

International Medical Corps: To donate to this global non-profit's Emergency Response Efforts fund, simply go to their site and select the amount you wish to donate (be sure to note if you want your donation to be a "recurring gift" for future relief efforts) and fill in your information.

GlobalGiving.org: Working with other organizations such as the International Medical Corps, D.C.-based organization GlobalGiving has launched the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, which will give aid to on the ground organizations providing emergency services. They are accepting donations online with a funding goal of $90, 000.

Convoy of Hope: This non-profit focuses on disaster relief efforts and you can donate either online at their site or via text message by texting TSUNAMI to 50555 (you'll also be prompted to confirm with a follow up text of YES).

UPDATE: We've been hearing of more organizations that are leading the way in helping victims of the earthquake and tsunami so we'll be updating this list as they come in. If you know of more organizations that are doing great work and need help with donations, aid or volunteers please let us know.

Salvation Army: The Japan branch of the Salvation Army has been working in Tokyo to offer shelter to stranded commuters and they are  reportedly organizing a team to send to Sendai Friday night. They also have their Hawaii branch standing by, ready to help. You can help their relief efforts by texting JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 to make a $10 donation.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF): This medical nonprofit has expanded its team in Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami. They currently have teams working in mobile clinics in areas that are inaccessible by road due to damage. You can donate to their Japan Relief fund online here.

Google's Person Finder: The search giant has launched a Japanese version of their person finder tool, so that victims and families can locate and connect with one another in the aftermath. So find a person or offer information about a person, see their site.

ஒரு சமூகம் உயிர்த்துடிப்புடன் திகழ்வதற்கு ஆசிரியர்களின் பங்களிப்பு மகத்தானது. சமூகத்தின் எழுச்சிக்கும் வீழ்ச்சிக்கும் ஆசிரியர்களின் நேர் நடத்தைகளும் எதிர் நடத்தைகளும் காரணமாக அமைந்துவிடுவது மறுக்க முடியாத உண்மையே.

எனவே, ஆசிரியரின் முக்கியத்துவத்தினையும் ஆசிரியத்துவத்தின் மேன்மையினையும் நாம் நன்குணர்ந்து செயலாற்ற வேண்டியது அவசியம்.

உலகிலேயே சேவைகளில் எல்லாம் மிக உன்னதமான சேவை கற்பித்தலேயாகும். கற்பித்தலில் ஈடுபடும் ஒவ்வொரு ஆசிரியரும் அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் செயற்பட வேண்டியது இன்றியமையாதது. கற்பித்தலைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில் ஆசிரியர்கள் அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை ஆசி ரியர்கள் மட்டுமன்றி மாணவர் கள், அதிகாரிகள், பெற்றோர் உட் பட சகலரும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கின்ற னர்.

ஆசிரிய சேவையில் ஈடுபடு வோர் அதன் புனிதத்தைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். வெற்றிகர மான கற்பித்தலுக்கு தெளிந்த மனமும் சிறந்த ஆளு மையும், அர்ப்பணிப்பும் அவசியம். இவற் றைத் தரவல்லது ஆசிரியர்களின் நேர் நடத்தைகளே ஆகும். எனவே, அவர்கள் அதில் அதிக கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டும். ஆசிரியர்களது முன்மாதிரியான நடத்தைகள் மூல மாக சிறப்பான மாணவச் சமூகத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்ப முடியும் என்பதை ஆசிரியர்கள் கட்டாயம் உணர வேண்டும். தொடர்ந்து வாசிக்க இங்கே சொடக்கவும்

வாசிப்பு திறன்

“கல்வி கரையில் கற்பவர் நாள் சில

மெல்ல நினைக்கற் பிணி பல”

என்கின்றது நாலடியார். சில வாழ்நாட் பிணிச்சிற்றறிவுடைய மாந்தர் கல்வியை முற்றாக கற்க முடியாது எனபதே நாலடியாரின் வாக்கு. எனினும் பரந்து பட்ட அக்கல்வியில் அணுவளவேனும் கற்று சிந்தை விருத்தியுடைய அறிவுச் செல்வத்தை சிரத்தையோடு தேடும் போதே மனித வாழ்வு செழிப்படையும். மனிதன் மனிதனாகிறான். இதனையே இரண்டடியில் இனிதே தருகிறார் வள்ளுவப் பெருந்தகை,

“விலங்கொடு மக்களனையர் இலங்குநூல்

கற்றாரோடு ஏனையவர்”

என ஓர் உவமை மூலம் உணர்த்துகிறார். வாழும் பொருளாம் கல்வியறிவுடையோரே மனிதர் என்றும் கல்வியறிவு அற்றோர் விலங்குகள் என கூறுகிறார்.

மனிதனை மனிதனாக மாற்றும் சிறப்புடைய கல்வியை பெறுவதற்கு காட்சி, அனுபவம், கேள்வி முதலிய வழிகள் உள்ளபோதும் அவற்றுள் சிறந்து விளங்குவது நூல்களே ஆகும். அந்நூல்களும் பொருளுணர்ந்து வாசிக்கும் பழக்கத்தாலே பயன் கொள்ளப்படுகின்றது. எனவே வாசிக்கும் பழக்கம் கல்வியின் ஆணிவேராக அடித்தளமாக காணப்படுகின்றது.

“இளமையிற் கல்வி சிலையில் எழுத்து”

என்பது உளவியல் சார்ந்த ஒரு முதுமொழி. மன விசாரங்களும், மன விகாரங்களும் அற்ற இளமைப் பருவத்தில் கற்கும் கல்வி சிந்தாது, சிதறாது, சிதையாது. மனதிலே பசுமரத்தாணி போல் பதியும். எனவேதான் கல்விக்கு அடித்தளமாய் அமையும். வாசிப்பு பழக்கம் இளமையிலே அரும்பி வளர்ந்து முதிர்ச்சி பெறுதல் வேண்டும். அதனாலேயே புதிய கல்விக் கொள்கையில் வாசிப்புக்கு அதி முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மாணவர் மொழியாற்றலில் முன்னேற்றம் காண்பதற்கு முதனிலையாகவும், முதன்மை நிலையாகவும் வாசிப்பு அமைகின்றது. நூல்களை பிழையின்றி வாசித்தல், கருத்தை விளங்கிக் கொள்ளல், விளங்கிய கருத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தல் ஆகிய முத்திறனும் மொழித்தேர்ச்சியில் அடங்குவன. மாணவர் சிலர் பிழையற வாசிப்பர். ஆனால் கருத்தை விளங்கிக் கொள்ளமாட்டர்கள். சிலர் வாசித்து விளங்கிக் கொள்வர். ஆனால் விளங்கியதை வெளிப்படுத்தமாட்டர். அவர்கள் கனவு கண்ட ஊமைகள் போன்றவர்கள். எனவே வாசித்தவற்றை விளங்கிக் கொண்டு அவற்றை வெளிப்படுத்தும் ஆற்றலே மெய்யான மொழியாற்றலாகும்.

முறையான மொழியாற்றல் கைவரப்பெற்ற மாணவனின் பேச்சில் தெளிவும், கருத்தாழமும் காணப்படும். உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனி போல் எந்தக் கருத்தையும் தெளிவாகப் பிறர் விளங்கிக் கொள்ளுமாறு உரைப்பான். அவனது எழுத்து நடை எளிமையும், இனிமையும், தெளிவும், கருத்தாழமும், வழுவின்மையும் கொண்டதாக அமையும்.

வாசிப்பு பழக்கம் பெற்ற மாணவன் ஒருவனுடைய கட்டுரைகள் அவ்வாறற்ற மாணவன் ஒருவனின் கட்டுரையுடன் ஒப்பிட்டு நோக்கின் உண்மை புலனாகும். அன்றியும் செம்மையான வாசிப்பு திறன் பெறாத மாணவன் பள்ளியிற் பயிலும் பாடங்களின் சிறப்பு நிலை அடைய முடியாதவாறு திண்டாடுகின்றான். குருடன் போல தடுமாறி பருவலடைகின்றான். குறிப்பாக கணிதம், விஞ்ஞானம் போன்ற பாடங்களை கற்கும் மாணவன் விவேகியாக இருக்காவிடின் அவனுடைய சீரற்ற வாசிப்பு திறன் காரணமாக அவன் அப்பாட நூல்களையோ, அவை சம்மந்தமான வினாக்களை விரைந்து விளக்குமாற்றல் இல்லாது திண்டாடுகின்றான். தனது பூரண ஆற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்த முடியாதவனாகின்றான். அவன் விவேகத்தால் முழுப்பயனை அடைய முடியாதவனாகின்றான். காட்டில் எரியும் நிலவைப் போல விவேகம் குறைந்தவனாயினும் வினாக்களை வாசித்து விளங்கித் தெளிவுறுபவன் விடைகளையெழுதி சிறப்பு சித்தி பெறுகின்றான். எனவே கல்லூரியில் பாடங்களில் மாணவர்கள் திறமை காட்ட வாசிப்பு திறன் இன்றியமையாததாகும்.

பாடசாலையில் பயிலும் பாடங்களோடு மாத்திரம் மாணவர்களின் கல்வி முற்றுப்பெறுவதில்லை. கரையற்ற கல்விக்கடலிலுள்ள சின்னஞ்சிறு துளியே அவன் கற்கும் கல்வி. அக்கல்வியில் ஒரு மாணவனது அறிவு பெருகி விடும் என எண்ணுவது பகற்கனவு. எனவே மாணவன் பாடநூல்களை கற்பதோடு பிற பல நூல்களை வாசித்தல் வேண்டும். “கண்டது கற்ற பண்டிதனாவான்” என்பது பழமொழி. நல்லனவென கண்டவற்றை கற்க வேண்டுமென அப்பழமொழி கூறுகின்றது.

வாசிப்பு திறனிலே தேர்ச்சி பெற்ற மாணவனின் உள்ளம் தணியாத பசி கொண்டதாக இருக்கும். எத்தனை நூல்களை வாசித்தாலும் அவனது பசி அடங்காது. மணிமேகலை எனும் காப்பியத்தில், “யானைப்பசி எனும் நோய் கொண்ட காயசண்டிகை என்பவள் எவ்வளவு உணவு, எந்நேரம் கொடுத்தாலும் அடங்காத பசி கொண்டவள்” என குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றது. ஒவ்வொரு மாணவனும் காயசண்டிகையின் உணவுப் பசி போல வாசிப்பில் பசி கொண்டிராவிட்டால் அவனது உயர்வுக்கு வித்திடப்படுமோ? தானாகவே கிணற்றுத் தவளை நிலைக்கு சென்று விடுவான். ஆழமற்ற அறிவுடையவனாவான்.

மாறாக மாணவன் வாசிப்பில் கவனம் செலுத்துவானாகில், அறிவால் மட்டுமல்ல உள்ளத்தாலும் உயர்ந்தவனாகின்றான். வாழ்வினையும் வாழிவின் விழுமியங்களையும் புலப்படுத்தும் இலக்கியம், கட்டுரை, கவிதை முதலியவற்றை படிப்பதால் வாழ்வில் தான் கண்டறியாத புதிய புதிய கதைகளை உருவாக்குகின்றான், குணாதிசயங்களை உணர்கின்றான், பலகோணங்களில் வாழ்வை காண்கின்றான். பற்பல புதிய விடயங்களை பெறுகின்றான். நல்லவை எவை? தீயவை எவை? என பாகுபடுத்தக்கூடியவனாகின்றான்.

இதனால் அவன் உள்ளம் விரிவடைகின்றது. எதிர்கால வாழ்விற்கு தம்மை தயார் செய்யும் உன்னத நிலை உருவாகின்றது. மாணவர்களே எதிர்காலத்திலன் சிற்பிகள், ஒரு நாட்டின் தூண்கள், நாளைய விடியல்கள், எதிர்கால குடிமக்களும் அவர்களேதான். அவர்கள் அறிவுச்செல்வத்தால் உள்ளத்தில் உயர்ந்து உருவாக வேண்டுமேயானால், அவர்கள் வாசிப்புத் திறனை விருத்தி செய்ய வேண்டும். வாசிப்பு திறன் கைவரப்பெற்ற மாணவன் கல்விக் கரையை கடந்தவனாகின்றான். கல்வியெனும் நீள் வளியில் அரைபங்கு கடந்துவிடுகின்றான். அன்றியும் முழுமையான மனித வளர்ச்சிக்கு தன்னைத் தானே ஆயத்தமாக்கியவனாகின்றான்.

ஆகவே மாணவர்களாகிய நாம் நிகழ்கால விதைகள், எதிர்கால விருட்சங்கள் என்பதை உணர்ந்து வாசிப்பு திறனை வளர்த்து வாழ்க்கை எனும் நீண்ட பயணத்தினை இலகுவில் கடப்போமாக.

How To Create Reading Habit Among Kid

If reading is a habit you’d like to get into, there are a number of ways to cultivate it.
First, realize that reading is highly enjoyable, if you have a good book. If you have a lousy book (or an extremely difficult one) and you are forcing yourself through it, it will seem like a chore. If this happens for several days in a row, consider abandoning the book and finding one that you’ll really love.
Other than that, try these tips to cultivate a lifetime reading habit:

• Set times. You should have a few set times during every day when you’ll read for at least 5-10 minutes. These are times that you will read no matter what — triggers that happen each day. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast and lunch (and even dinner if you eat alone). And if you also read every time you’re sitting on the can, and when you go to bed, you now have four times a day when you read for 10 minutes each — or 40 minutes a day. That’s a great start, and by itself would be an excellent daily reading habit. But there’s more you can do.
• Always carry a book. Wherever you go, take a book with you. When I leave the house, I always make sure to have my drivers license, my keys and my book, at a minimum. The book stays with me in the car, and I take it into the office and to appointments and pretty much everywhere I go, unless I know I definitely won’t be reading (like at a movie). If there is a time when you have to wait (like at a doctor’s office or at the DMV), whip out your book and read. Great way to pass the time.
• Make a list. Keep a list of all the great books you want to read. You can keep this in your journal, in a pocket notebook, on your personal home page, on your personal wiki, wherever. Be sure to add to it whenever you hear about a good book, online or in person. Keep a running list, and cross out the ones you read. Tech trick: create a Gmail account for your book list, and email the address every time you hear about a good book. Now your inbox will be your reading list. When you’ve read a book, file it under “Done”. If you want, you can even reply to the message (to the same address) with notes about the book, and those will be in the same conversation thread, so now your Gmail account is your reading log too.
•  
• Find a quiet place. Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair (don’t lay down unless you’re going to sleep) and curl up with a good book without interruptions. There should be no television or computer near the chair to minimize distractions, and no music or noisy family members/roommates. If you don’t have a place like this, create one.
• Reduce television/Internet. If you really want to read more, try cutting back on TV or Internet consumption. This may be difficult for many people. Still, every minute you reduce of Internet/TV, you could use for reading. This could create hours of book reading time.
•  
• Read to your kid. If you have children, you must, must read to them. Creating the reading habit in your kids is the best way to ensure they’ll be readers when they grow up … and it will help them to be successful in life as well. Find some great children’s books, and read to them. At the same time, you’re developing the reading habit in yourself … and spending some quality time with your child as well.
• Keep a log. Similar to the reading list, this log should have not only the title and author of the books you read, but the dates you start and finish them if possible. Even better, put a note next to each with your thoughts about the book. It is extremely satisfying to go back over the log after a couple of months to see all the great books you’ve read.
• Go to used book shops. My favorite place to go is a discount book store where I drop off all my old books (I usually take a couple of boxes of books) and get a big discount on used books I find in the store. I typically spend only a couple of dollars for a dozen or more books, so although I read a lot, books aren’t a major expense. And it is very fun to browse through the new books people have donated. Make your trip to a used book store a regular thing.
• Have a library day. Even cheaper than a used book shop is a library, of course. Make it a weekly trip.
•  
• Read fun and compelling books. Find books that really grip you and keep you going. Even if they aren’t literary masterpieces, they make you want to read — and that’s the goal here. After you have cultivated the reading habit, you can move on to more difficult stuff, but for now, go for the fun, gripping stuff. Stephen King, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Nora Roberts, Sue Grafton, Dan Brown … all those popular authors are popular for a reason — they tell great stories. Other stuff you might like: Vonnegut, William Gibson, Douglas Adams, Nick Hornby, Trevanian, Ann Patchett, Terry Pratchett, Terry McMillan, F. Scott Fitzgerald. All excellent storytellers.
• Make it pleasurable. Make your reading time your favorite time of day. Have some good tea or coffee while you read, or another kind of treat. Get into a comfortable chair with a good blanket. Read during sunrise or sunset, or at the beach.
• Blog it. One of the best ways to form a habit is to put it on your blog. If you don’t have one, create one. It’s free. Have your family go there and give you book suggestions and comment on the ones you’re reading. It keeps you accountable for your goals.
• Set a high goal. Tell yourself that you want to read 50 books this year (or some other number like that). Then set about trying to accomplish it. Just be sure you’re still enjoying the reading though — don’t make it a rushed chore.
• Have a reading hour or reading day. If you turn off the TV or Internet in the evening, you could have a set hour (perhaps just after dinner) when you and maybe all the members of your family read each night. Or you could do a reading day, when you (and again, your other family members if you can get them to join you) read for practically the whole day. It’s super fun.

Keeping in Touch With Your Child's Teacher

Parent-teacher communication plays a big role in helping your child to have a successful academic career. Since parents and teachers know different aspects of a child's personality, they must work together to solve problems or celebrate gains. Unfortunately, because teachers spend their time in the classroom with students, it may not always be easy to get in touch with your child's teacher. Knowing some of the Dos and Don'ts of parent-teacher communication can help you make that connection.

Keeping Parent-Teacher Communication Lines Open

• Don't: Feel as though you're being a nuisance. Whether you have concerns, questions or just simply want to say "Great job," it's perfectly all right to get in touch with your child's teacher. That's what good parent-teacher communication is all about.

• Do: Advocate for your child. His teacher may spend six hours a day with him and know him within the school setting, but you're with him the rest of the time and know him in a very different light. If there is something he needs or if something isn't going well, make yourself heard.

• Don't: Wait until there's a problem to get in touch with your child's teacher.

• Do:  Make an effort to introduce yourself in person, in writing or over the phone, as a way to begin a good parent-teacher relationship.

• Don't: Call your child's teacher during the school day and expect to be put right through to her.

• Do: Let your child's teacher know what is a good way to get in touch with you and at what times. Teachers are busy teaching during the school day and often use breaks to use the bathroom, grab a quick lunch and/or prepare lesson plans. Thus, you may have to wait until after school hours to speak on the phone. However, if you let the teacher know that you can be reached via note or email or that early in the morning is a fine time to call, you have a better chance of speaking soon.

• Don't: Say to the person who answers the phone "Tell her Jane Smith called" and expect the teacher to know who you are and that you would like a return call.

• Do: Leave a message identifying whose parent you are and leave as much detail as you feel comfortable sharing about why you are calling. If you would like a call back, make sure to mention that in your message.

• Don't: Call your child's teacher at home unless she has specifically indicated it is OK.

• Do: Ask the teacher whether it's all right to reach her at home in the evening to discuss a problem your child is having. While many teachers prefer not to be disturbed at home, some don't mind and will provide their home phone number to a parent whom they know will not abuse it. If you have her home number, make sure to be respectful of the teacher's time, calling at a reasonable hour and only for urgent situations (usually problems that need addressing before the next school day).

• Don't: Hesitate to request a meeting.

• Do: Let your child's teacher know if you need a few face-to-face minutes with her. Just be sure to let her know why, whether you'd like other staff to be there and about how long you expect the meeting to take. That way she can set aside enough time for you.

• Don't: Assume that phone calls and notes are the only way to speak with a teacher.

• Do:  Find out whether or not your school or school district has an intranet, which provides each teacher with a school-related email address. Email is a very quick and easy way to get in touch with a teacher and can provide a great parent-teacher communication platform in which issues or questions can be addressed without playing phone tag or setting up a meeting.

• Don't: Send an unsealed note to your child's teacher and expect your son or daughter not to read it.

• Do:  Seal notes in an envelope or fold and staple them shut, so it's obvious if little eyes have been prying. Make sure to clearly print the teacher's name on the outside if it is for her eyes only. That way, if there is a substitute for the day the note will be set aside unread.
